 Introduction

Translation Memory Software – Wordfast Anywhere

Overview

Wordfast Anywhere is free translation memory software which means it is a linguistic database that records and organizes your translations as you work for future use. It also allows several translators to work on the same project using the same translation memory in real time.  The software collects translations within its memory in the source and target language pairs called translation units.  These translation units then are used in future translations so it is no longer necessary to translate them again.  Increasing the number of translation units will aide in speed on future projects.  As you translate the translation memory software will suggest matches that can either be accepted or overridden.  If accepted, the memory will be updated.  If overridden and manually updated the new translation unit will then be stored in memory for future translations as well for the remaining current translation project.  In order to complete a translation using Wordfast Anywhere the user will need to log on, set up translation memory, open a document, translate a document and finally, download the completed document.

Process Description

Logging on.

Begin by typing www.freetm.com into the browser.  This will pull up the homepage for Wordfast Anywhere.  Click on “Register a new account” and enter a valid email and a password that has at least 5 characters and at least 1 number.  When finished click on create.

The remainder of the screen is divided into two sections.  The first section is about ¼ the size of the screen.  It holds alternative machine translations.  The lower and larger window pane, which is about 3/4th of the screen, is referred to as the document pane.  The document pane is where you can upload a document to from the File Menu, Clipboard or drag and drop a document.  Once a document is placed into the document pane it will be divided by translation units.  The first line will be the source text, immediately followed by a suggested translation, where available.

Existing glossaries in Wordfast TXT or tab delimited text format can be uploaded.  Users can have access to infinite number of glossaries simultaneously.

Data such as translation memories, glossaries, files personal information, etc. that is uploaded and kept in the workspace will be protected and held confidential.  It will never be shared unless you specifically invite them.  All data once deleted is permanently removed and cannot be retrieved.

Conclusion

In this report translation memory software, Wordfast Anywhere was analyzed. By using Wordfast Anywhere a translation project can be completed in less time than it would take a translator to do.  Since the software offers suggestions to match translation units the translation project is more consistent and accurate.  The more Wordfast Anywhere is used the quicker the translating of future projects becomes.
